PEM Fellowship Nuts and Bolts

The UMC Pediatric Emergency Department at Children’s Hospital of Nevada is a 20-bed unit with over 25,000 annual visits. As Nevada’s only Level II Pediatric Trauma Center—and the only pediatric ED staffed 24/7 by board-certified PEM physicians—it is the state’s premier destination for pediatric emergency care and medical education.

Didactic Curriculum

Fellows’ Conference is dedicated, protected time each Thursday designed to strengthen both knowledge and clinical skills. The curriculum blends high-yield board prep, interactive simulations, hands-on procedure and ultrasound workshops, journal clubs, and dynamic case presentations. Our curriculum is built to keep learning dynamic and relevant. Sessions are led by PEM fellows, faculty, and invited guest speakers, bringing fresh perspectives from inside and outside our department. Fellows also participate in joint conferences with Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics, fostering collaboration across specialties, while enjoying valuable opportunities to teach and mentor medical students and residents.

Extra-Clinical Activities

Training here goes far beyond the hospital walls. In the heart of Las Vegas—the entertainment capital of the world—fellows have the opportunity to gain unique experiences in event medicine at the concerts, Formula 1, music festivals, and professional sports games, as well as opportunities in rural outreach and wilderness medicine. When a fifth Thursday rolls around, fellows trade the classroom for the city, enjoying time together at non-didactic outings that showcase everything Las Vegas has to offer.

Outreach & Involvement

Fellows actively engage in significant involvement in community, hospital, and state-level initiatives. They interact with the community through programs like the "teddy bear clinic," an initiative designed to alleviate children's fears about medical environments and procedures. Within the hospital, fellows are integral members of various committees (such as Code Blue and Gun Safety), contributing to crucial patient safety and quality improvement efforts. Our advocacy reaches beyond the hospital and community with fellows involved in the Nevada Emergency Medical Services for Children program and the State Child Abuse Care Committee.
