I am very excited for the opportunity to be the medical student liaison for the 2009-2010 academic year here at the Las Vegas emergency medicine residency program (LVEMR). As the medical student liaison I will be your contact for questions regarding the rotation, questions about doing a future rotation here, or any questions you have as you embark on this segment of your career - including the ERAS application process. In addition, I will be present and often leading your didactic sessions, skills workshops, and simulation lab. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions that may arise.
The goals for the student rotation at the LVEMR will challenge you to perform your best both clinically and didactically. You will see patients in the Adult Emergency Department, the UMC Trauma Center, and the Pediatric Emergency Department. You will present your patients directly to both the attending physicians and the senior residents in the department. At the conclusion of your rotation you will:
1. Be able to develop a differential diagnosis and plan for common emergency presentations
2. Have gained a mastery of the problem focused patient presentation
3. Be familiar with the common emergency medicine procedures/skills
4. Have participated in weekly grand rounds as an active member of our group
5. Have completed simulated cases/codes both individually and in groups
6. Complete a written post rotation exam based on your 4 week curriculum
7. Participate in journal club and/or other departmental educational activities
During your rotation you will be evaluated by the attending physicians and senior residents at the conclusion of each clinical shift. In addition, at the midpoint of the rotation you will meet with the program director to discuss your rotation experience.
As prospective residents, your fourth year emergency medicine rotations are vital. At the LVEMR, our goal is to provide the strongest emergency medicine experience possible.
