SURVIVOR: LAS VEGAS -- The Ultimate Wilderness Medicine Experience
March 27 - April 8, 2011

Participate in the annual UNSOM, Department of Emergency Medicine's Wilderness Medicine Rotation, affiliated with the Wilderness Medical Society. Your wilderness experience will cover a comprehensive spectrum of topics including Hands-on practical wilderness outdoor workshops, disaster challenges, outdoor experiences, rescue training, interesting lectures and presentations, and exciting evening programs.

Course participants will have an opportunity to accumulate both core and elective credit to become a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness MedicineTM.

Course Purpose:

To facilitate health care providers practical and theoretical knowledge and skills that will help them to perform optimally in extreme and wilderness settings.

Educational Objectives:

Provide health care providers with increased knowledge in treating medical problems unique to the wilderness setting, including high altitude illness, environmental exposure, lightning injuries, toxic plant, insect, and reptile exposure, and wound management.

Provide new tools to those who work in remote settings, including initial patient assessment, wound management, fracture and dislocation reduction, rescue and evacuation skills, and basic survival skills.

Demonstrate increased skill in treating environmental emergencies.

Prevent, identify, diagnose, and treat medical emergencies encountered in the wilderness.

Instruct health-care providers on the importance of leadership and teamwork in the wilderness setting.

Cost:

  • $300. This includes transportation during the week, the use of some equipment and approximately 20 meals.
