Medical Student Clerkship

UNLV Student Clerkship

Medical students of the University of Nevada Las Vegas who are interested in emergency medicine will be offered an opportunity to rotate in the UMC emergency department with the residents and faculty.

The rotation may take place at the end of the student’s 3rd year or at the beginning of the 4th year. Rotations will last 4 weeks and consist of the same curriculum as auditioning students.

This one-month rotation will be considered a “Home Audition Rotation” for the UNLV student and they will have the opportunity to obtain a Standard Letter of Evaluation (SLOE) at the conclusion of this rotation.

Medical Student Clerkship

The UNLV Department of Emergency Medicine at University Medical Center (UMC) offers an exciting and challenging four-week rotation in Emergency Medicine for senior medical students. Students will have the opportunity to experience the only level 1 trauma center in Nevada that is a fast-paced and high acuity emergency department. The goal of the rotation is to provide students with the clinical skills and knowledge needed to appropriately evaluate all types of emergency patients, with an emphasis on treating the acutely ill and injured patient.

Clerkship Objectives

  1. To improve the student's history taking skills, focusing on the chief complaint and recognizing the pertinent historical points.
  2. To improve the student's focused physical exam and recognition of the importance of each individual component.
  3. To further develop student's oral presentation skills and differential diagnosis utilizing an emergency medicine perspective.
  4. To foster the student's ability to recognize the acuity of patient illness, and concurrently manage and disposition multiple patients.
  5. To gain insight into the pathogenesis and appropriate management of the common chief complaints of emergency department patients.
  6. To improve the technical skills of common emergency department procedures, including airway management, intubation, wound care, fracture management, splinting,  intravenous access, bedside ultrasound, ECG interpretation, and lumbar puncture.
  7. To further develop the student's awareness of the team approach to emergency care and the importance of developing strong working relationships with all staff.
  8. To foster a strong work ethic and the importance of responsibility and professionalism.

Clinical Experience

Picture
Students work alongside emergency medicine residents and faculty for 12 to 14 12-hour clinical shifts in the University Medical Center (UMC) Adult Emergency Department, Trauma Resuscitation Unit, and Pediatric Emergency Department. Students work as sub-interns and work alongside residents as part of the primary medical team. The clinical performance of students will be evaluated after each shift by the supervising physician and resident physician with whom they worked.

Didactics

Picture
Students will have their own dedicated didactic lectures, simulations, and procedure labs every week. They also participate in the weekly EM Grand Rounds residency lecture series and monthly journal club. Each student's academic performance and evaluation will be based on their didactic participation and written exam at the conclusion of their rotation.
