The goal of the clerkship is to provide students with the clinical skills and knowledge needed to appropriately evaluate, treat and disposition common emergency presentations, with an emphasis on treating the acutely ill and injured patient.
Medical students will work one-on-one with attendings and residents while on shift. They will be an integral member of the medical team. Students are expected to function at the level of a sub-intern. Students will learn to formulate differential diagnosis and evidence-based treatment plans, interpret clinical tests such as EKG, imaging studies and laboratory test. Students will also assist and perform many emergent procedures necessary to take care of the patients they see on shift.

In addition to the outstanding clinical experience, we offer a robust didactic curriculum. Each week on Tuesday, students will meet in the UNLV high fidelity SIM lab for a 2-hour lecture and procedure series. During this time, students will further improve their skills in ultrasound, central lines, intubations, and many other procedures focused on acute care. Medical students will also attend our weekly resident conference on Wednesday mornings 8a-1p and monthly journal club on the fourth Tuesday evening of every month.
