Ultrasound

UNLV Emergency Ultrasound Program

Point of care ultrasound has become an integral part of patient care in the field of emergency medicine.  We understand the importance of ensuring that our residents become competent in all of the core bedside ultrasound applications and have a comprehension of advancements in the ultrasound field.  Our emergency ultrasound program is directed by Jamie Baydoun, M.D., ARDMS Certified, and Brian Ault, D.O.  Beginning with the intern orientation process, our EM residents are exposed to bedside ultrasound as well as ultrasound physics during a day-long workshop.  This allows our residents to start incorporating ultrasound into their patient care from their first clinical shifts.

RESIDENT ULTRASOUND CURRICULUM

Our curriculum covers all of the core applications of emergency ultrasound, which include FAST, gallbladder, aorta, renal, cardiac, pulmonary, OB, vascular, and ocular. These core applications are reviewed during quarterly didactics and hands-on workshops. The more advanced ultrasound topics are also covered during the ultrasound lecture series.  The residents have access to EmSono, which is an added on-line resource for ultrasound education.

Components of our ultrasound training include:
     • Introduction to ultrasound workshop during the first month of residency
     • One-week ED ultrasound rotations in each of the PGY1 and PGY2 training years
     • Ultrasound scanning ED shifts distributed throughout the PGY3 training year
     • Ongoing QA with the ultrasound faculty
     • Image presentation during conferences
     • EmSono review lectures and tests

     • Quarterly hands-on US skills sessions
